Drawing Playful Picture Stories, with Adam Ming

11-15 March 2027

In this creative escape with Adam Ming you will experience creating picture stories in a playful and collaborative way.
You will turn sparks of inspiration into a various types of picture stories. This could be anything from postcards and zines, to comic strips and picture book spreads. It will be a fully guided, hands on step-by-step experience with plenty of room for play. Some sessions move fast. Others slow all the way down, like an afternoon sketching at the castle with a few prompts for guidance: You’ll draw, you’ll collage, and explore different materials and techniques.
We’ll create a character and experience Monsaraz through their eyes. By the end of this creative journey, you’ll walk away with:
1. A filled sketchbook and a repeatable toolkit for turning ideas into picture stories.
2. A character you built, drawn a dozen different ways, that feels alive.
3. Bonus: one-on-one office hours with Adam to discuss your project, your portfolio, or just talk shop.

Styles & Subjects: Character illustration, mixed media, collage, sketchbook journaling, sequential art and picture-book storytelling. This Inspiring Art Escape is built around 3 modules:

Module 1:  Discover Story Moments. The group will assemble moodboards together to serve as inspiration throughout this art immersion. You will discover sketchbook and journal techniques to discover and capture inspiration.

Module 2: Bring Characters to Life. You will explore a number of fun techniques to produce characters easily. You will get feedback on your work through silent voting, to help you choose the best ones. You’ll draw them and collage them, in different ways with different mediums and learn to really play with your characters as a way to get to know them.

Module 3: Tell Stories With Pictures. Illustration is telling stories with pictures. And you will learn how to develop ideas iteratively from concept to final form. We will learn to apply the building blocks of illustration to create 3 distinct forms, a single image (poster, postcard, book cover), sequential art (comic strip or zine), and a picture book spread.

You will learn with:
