ILLUSTRATION, PATTERNS & VISUAL LANGUAGE

Spend five days immersed in art, place, and process in the historic village of Monsaraz, Portugal. Surrounded by rolling landscapes, whitewashed houses, traditional tiles, ceramics, and centuries of visual culture, this retreat invites you to slow down and explore how place, pattern, and material can shape your creative work.
Rather than focusing on finished artworks or productivity, this retreat centers on observation, research, and interpretation. Through guided drawing sessions, inspiration walks, museum visits, and outdoor sketching, we’ll explore patterns, symbols, colors, and textures found in Portuguese folk art and architecture, and translate them into our own visual language. We’ll work both analog and digital, using sketchbooks and Procreate. The emphasis is on building a personal visual library, experimenting freely, and understanding how repetition, rhythm, and color interact, without pressure to perform or compare.
This retreat is open to artists, illustrators, and creatives at any stage of their journey. Whether you work digitally or traditionally, what matters most is curiosity and a willingness to observe, explore, and experiment. No prior experience with pattern design is required.

Learning the Basics of Eating and Cooking Great Food

Mastering how to live with home cooking in a balanced healthy way: what does it take?

In this retreat with Trine Hahnemann we will spend time understanding the holistic circle of taking care of ourselves with healthy eating, done by home cooking and the basics we need, understanding the seasons where we live. In beautiful surroundings, we will have workshops together around seasonal produce. What is season and how should we understand it in the times we live now?

  • How to plan your week, what should be in my pantry, what is a seasonal salad, soup, stew, how do we get to eat 30 vegetables a week and why is that healthy?
  • How to not waste food. What about beans and lentils? What about tradition, why is eating cake a good thing?

We will visit producers, pick olives and spend time together emerging ourselves in understanding the world seen through food. And you can develop a healthier and conscious relationship with food; a good life is about good food and having time to cook and enjoying the eating.
