This summer experience is all about sketching beautiful scenes in sunny Portugal. We will capture the magic of this unique place using various artistic techniques: sketching, watercolor painting and mixed media. Inspiration awaits us around every corner.
Once we’ve walked around and captured our scenes, we’ll retire to the fireplace to exchange our stories and enjoy delicious food and wine.
Together we will take a closer look at the many shades and colours that the Portuguese landscape has to offer, with its old cities and ancient historical sites. We will observe light and shadow, learn how to create 3-dimensionality with tone values, where to start a sketch and when to end it … Hans-Christian will show you how to create a story of your trip in sketches, create beautiful spreads on double pages and add typography to give your sketch a nice finish. WEDNESDAY, 5 JUNE
You will be picked up at Lisbon airport around 4 pm.
Please plan your arrival accordingly. Around 7 pm, we will reach Hotel Vila Planície, Monsaraz for a light dinner.
THURSDAY, 6 JUNE
After breakfast at the hotel, you will walk 15 minutes to “Sofia In Monsaraz” with your teacher. We will introduce ourselves before the workshop begins: You will learn about the basics of sketching, which materials to use and how to draw and paint with them.
After a fresh and locally sourced lunch in the garden, we will visit at a rug factory and take a refreshing swim in the nearby lake. With pens and watercolour we capture our experiences in our sketchbooks.
At the end of each day there will be a feedback session to get feedback from your teacher and for you to see what the other participants have created – not to compare yourself, but to be inspired.
Before dinner at the castle, we enjoy sketching at a wine tasting, sharing our sketches and best experiences of the day.
FRIDAY , 7 JUNE
We start the day with a walk to “Sofia In Monsaraz”, where the workshop starts. Today we deal with image composition and how different techniques can help to build our visual language whilst drawing and painting on location. We gather around for lunch in the garden, which may be cooked in the outdoor oven.
In the afternoon, we capture the beautiful surroundings of Sofia in Monsaraz in our sketchbooks choosing different approaches.
After the daily feedback session it’s time to unwind with a yoga lesson or a chat around the fire pit. Dinner is not included. Choose from restaurant options nearby.
SATURDAY, 8 JUN
Today we grab our sketchbooks and take a bus ride of about an hour to Estremoz Village. We continue sketching at the Museum of Tiles and capture scenes at the amazing local market. Depending on the weather, we will enjoy lunch in a nearby restaurant or have a nice picnic instead.
Just before the end of the day, we’ll come together to share our drawings. In the last feedback session you will get individual advice on your art improvement and how to keep going. Before dinner at the local restaurant, we will enjoy a cocktail while discussing how to make sketching a daily routine and a priceless part of your life.
SUNDAY, 9 JUNE
After breakfast you return to Lisbon at approximately 12:30 pm.
On the way to Lisbon we will visit a local pottery shop and maybe create some quick sketches as souvenirs from this trip.
Everything is organised to detail so that nothing will prevent you from enjoying all the peace and quiet of the Alentejo.
All the rooms have air conditioning, full and private bathroom, shared or private balcony and outdoor access.
This accommodation is a 15-minute walk from the workshop venue (SIM) and passes by the Bulhoa menhir (National Monument) and the Alentejo plain, ideal for reflection before starting work.

Internacional roundtrip airfare, alcoholic drinks, boat trip, activities not included in the itinery, hotel incidentals including room service, materials list, expenses during free time, laundry service and hotel bar, food and beverages not included in the itinerary. COVID-19 test, if applicable.
We require all participantes to have a personal travel insurance that at minimum covers medical emergencies and cancellations. We do not provide travel insurance for the retreat and each participant is required to have their own individual travel insurance. The place, where the retreat happens, has an Insurance that covers accidents. Will not be responsible for refunding any lost trip funds if you have to miss your scheduled trip.
We cannot guarantee to accommodate vegan, gluten free or dairy/egg free, and some allergies. We are unable to accommodate participants with severe food allergies or food intolerances. Please contact us in advance of registering if you have any dietary questions.
It will start when arriving at the hotel, Wednesday and finish when you leave the hotel, by Sunday. We are not responsible for any non-retreat activity that a participant decides to purchase outside of the retreat and such activity will not form part of the participant’s contract with us. The bus transport is insurance secure.
This retreat includes one walking tour, where the ground may be uneven and you may be on your feet for several of hours at a time and should be comfortable walking 1km.
The supllies list will be sent with the Booking Form.
You may cancel before the end of February and receive a full refund minus 50€ fee.
Your payments will be split in two, with an initial deposit to secure your place on the retreat.
After you have completed your registration you will be sent an Invoice to complete your deposit payment. Payment can be made by Banktransfer or PayPal in euros. Additional costs may apply where special accommodations are made available to participants.
In this event we will accept until 15 people. The event does not include spouses, partners or friends if they are not taking the workshop.
If we cannot gather the minimum participants of 10, the event will be cancel and the payments refund to the participants.
