November 2024 (6 days and 5 nights)

A Portrait in Oils with Jane French

From 5 (Tuesday) until 10 (Sunday) November 2024

During this unique art retreat, you will learn to create portraits in oil inspired by the faces of Portugal and surrounded by the beautiful sights and sounds of Monsaraz. You will produce a selection of studies that focus on improving observational skills whilst pushing the vibrancy of your palette!

Jane French will teach you some of the basics of using oil paint as a medium, including palette preparation, colour-mixing, and brushwork. She will help you to improve your drawing skills and your ability to portray correct value levels. There will be opportunities to work directly from a live model as well as from photographic references. You will be encouraged to work using a ‘direct’ – or Alla Prima – method and Jane will demonstrate her use of vibrant colours and more ‘painterly’ mark-making. The course will include Tutor Demonstrations, one-to-one Tuition as well as a number of practical exercises.

This retreat is perfect for those with some experience of drawing the portrait – or figure – who are looking to incorporate colour into their work. It will be suitable for those with little or no experience of oil painting.

You will learn with:

Jane French

Based in Leicester, Jane French is an accomplished figurative artist and portrait painter.

She has had work selected for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibitions at the Mall Galleries in London. She is a proud member of the Contemporary British Portrait Painters collective (CBPP) – a group of some of the best portrait artists working in Britain today.

Having originally studied Fine Art at Newcastle University, and later an MA in Design at De Montfort University (Leicester), Jane worked as an illustrator and graphic designer before focusing professionally on her own practice.

She is also an art and design tutor, working online and at art centres and FE/HE institutions across the UK. In 2021 she was selected to appear in Sky Arts ‘Portrait Artist of the Year’. She painted comedian/writer/broadcaster Ian Hislop – who chose her painting to take home with him. In late 2021 and early 2022, Jane worked on a personal project during which she painted 100 Portraits.
